Edie the Pug
My pug, Edie, has her own corner of this blog — the stories, photos, and pet care collaborations that come out of sharing a home with her.
Edie is the four-legged reason so much of this site exists. Her experiences have shaped how I think about brachycephalic dogs, breathing problems, weight management, and day-to-day care, and many of the lessons she has taught me end up back here as advice for other pet owners.
Living with a Pug
Pugs are brachycephalic dogs — breeds with shortened airways. That single fact shapes much of what Edie needs and what I share with other owners.

Stories from a veterinarian’s own pug
Edie is a personal pet, and this section collects the stories that come with her: her personality, her quirks, and the small moments that keep a vet grounded. Her history is also referenced in my About page, where I talk about how a personal connection to pets shapes the way I practise.
Beyond Edie, more general pet stories and owner advice live under Advice & Stories.

Health lessons she has taught me
Living with a pug shaped my clinical interests, especially around the airway. I have written about brachycephalic dogs and breathing problems, and about weight management — both subjects with direct relevance to dogs like Edie.
- Recognising the early signs of breathing difficulty in flat-faced breeds.
- Why weight matters for a dog with a shortened airway.
- Daily care routines: teeth, nails, eyes, and nose.
Routine care topics such as annual exams and dental care and household dangers such as ibuprofen and xylitol are collected in their own sections of the blog.

Collaborations and shared pet care topics
Some of the Edie material grew out of collaborations with other pet writers and bloggers, combining a hands-on household view with veterinary perspective. These guest posts often reach beyond this site — for example, my writing has appeared on the Ontario SPCA blog and as a contributor to Dr. Andy Roark’s blog for pet owners and veterinary teams.

Edie online
Edie’s photos and day-to-day updates share space with the rest of the blog on social media. The same accounts that carry the site’s posts carry her pictures too.
Where the stories are filed
Edie’s posts are cross-posted into the same categories as the rest of the blog, so you can follow a topic through the archive.
